Client: Cape Fear Valley Health System

Industry: Healthcare

Size: 8,000 employees

Location: North Carolina

Lincoln products and services:

Absence Management, Life, AD&D, STD and LTD

Client need

Cape Fear Valley Health System, with over 8,000 employees and a lean human resources (HR) benefits team of three, faced significant challenges managing Evidence of Insurability (EOI) and leave events. Manual processes led to low EOI completion rates, frequent delays, and time-consuming communications. HR and managers were overwhelmed, and the employee experience was suffering. They needed help.

Results

EOI API impact

  • Completion rate jumped from 40% to 80%.
  • Saved 30 minutes per life event — both front-end and back-end.
  • Employees reported a seamless, easier experience.
  • HR now focuses on strategic tasks like verifying beneficiaries and educating employees.

Absence status API impact

  • Saved up to 20 hours per week in leave management.
  • Managers no longer manually enter time.
  • Improved morale among nurses and staff.
  • Fewer payroll issues and faster leave processing.

“Managers no longer need to manually enter time. They’re back on the floor, rounding and supporting patient care. Nurses appreciate their presence, which has boosted team morale and outcomes.”

— Angela Schweibinz, Manager of Compensation and Benefits

The Lincoln solution

With Lincoln’s LincSmart® technology and its partnership with Workday, Cape Fear Valley Health System implemented two key integrations:

EOI solution (SSO/API)

  • Embedded EOI form directly into the benefits shopping experience via single sign-on
  • Automated approval/denial process through API eliminated manual HR intervention
  • Seamless employee experience with real-time access to EOI decisions

Absence status API integration

  • Automated leave status updates sent directly to Workday
  • System-managed access controls and time-off entries (FMLA, PTO)
  • Reduced manual data entry for managers and improved visibility into leave status
